Black Seeded Angelino Watermelon
This melon loks like above and grows to the same size. Some prefer a black seeded melon and for that reason there is a large demand for Black Seeded Angelino. I grew only ten acres of this variety this year and cut the seed in one grade. My supply is short and I do not expect to be able to fill large orders very long. Price-(10c per pkt.) (15c per oz.) (40c per ¼ lb.) ($1.50 per lb.) ($1.40 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) ($1.25 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots) prepaid.
Burrell's Excel Watermelons Selected for Stock Seed
Last year I sold out of this seed and could not fill a great many orders. This year I grew a large acreage and can again say send in your orders I have a fine supply of excellent seed. My stock is selected to brown seed and runs very true. Excel is a good shipper, grows very large, often weighing sixty pounds or more. Rind dark green, slightly mottled stripe, very firm. The flesh is deep red when fully ripe and of good qulality. Care should be taken to allow the melons to become well ripened before picking. Grow the finest melons in your district from my seed. To get them extra fine plant 10 to 12 feet apart each way. Thin to one plant to the hill, cut off all but one melons to each plant. Fertilize well, hoe and cultivate often. Don't let any weeds or grass grow and don't pick them until they are fully ripened. Price-Special Stock Seed Burrell's Excel Watermelon, cut from melons weighing from forty to seventy pounds-(10c per pkt.) (20c per oz.) (65c per ¼ lb.) ($2.50 per lb.) ($2.40 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) ($2.25 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots and up) prepaid. No. 1 Seed Burrell's Excel Watermelon, saved from melons averaging about thirty pounds each (5c per pkt.) (10c per oz.) (30c per ¼ lb.) ($1.10 per lb.) ($1.00 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) (90c per lb. In 100-lb. Lots) prepaid.
Burrell's Improved Kleckley Sweet Watermelon
My strain of this melon is listed by some as the New Hard Shell Kelckley Sweet. THE MOST DELICIOUS WATERMELON GROWN; VERY PRODUCTIVE AND OF ATTRACTIVE APPEARANCE. Last year I thought I had enough seed of this fine melon to meet the demand but I was sold out so I could not take care of many large orders. This year I grew a large acreage and conditions were just right so that I cut about eighty thousand fine melons many weighing more than forty pounds each for my Stock Seed grade. These were the finest Kleckley Sweets I ever grew and I am ready for a large number of new customers. These melons are long, dark green, very uniform and in demand in all markets. They will ship quite well up to 200 miles. The flesh is bright red, very sweet and melting. The seeds are white and less seed per melon than in almost any other melon. I offer the seed in two grades as follows: Stock Seed Burrell's Improved Kleckley Sweets cut from the best melons which would average about 30 lbs. each and many up to 40 to 50 pounds each. Price-(10c per pkt.) (20c per oz.) (60c per ¼ lb.) ($2.25 per lb.) ($2.00 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) ($1.85 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots and up). Prepaid. No. 1 Seed Burrell's Improved Kleckley Sweet cut form good melons not so carefully selected as above but grown from the same selection of Stock Seed. Price-(5c per pkt.) (10c per oz.) (30c per ¼ lb.) ($1.10 per lb.) ($1.00 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) (85c per lb. In 100-lb. Lots). Prepaid.
Burrell's Select Winter Queen Watermelon
Above is from a photograph of one of my fields of this melon. The yield was 4,500 melons per acre, weighing about eighteen pounds each, or over 600 crates per acre. This variety of melons sold for about $2.50 per crate on the Eastern markets and this is evidence that they are real money makers. Some are so optimistic as to believe they will rival the cantaloupe in a few years in number of cars which may be profitably marketed. Winter Queens are sometimes wrongly called Black Seeded Icecream and as such a large acreage was grown in Washington, where about 200 cars were sold at big prices by Japanese growers, who would not tell where the seed could be obtained. Winter Queens are nearly round, nearly white, with narrow pale green stripes. The seeds are black and small. The flesh deep red, very firm, stringless, sweet, and of excellent quality. Ripen in about the same length of time as Kleckley Sweet, but remain solid and of good quality two or three months and may be kept until Christmas. They should be very profitable to ship South after southern melons are gone, but the weather is warm and the appetitie for watermelon lingers. Burrell's Select Winter Queens have very thin, tough rinds. The flesh is sweet down to the last red portion. The seeds are bedded firmly in the flesh-no cavity around them to allow them to shake and cause decay. I wish every one of my customers who can grow watermelons to plant some of the Winter Queens. Price-(5c per pkt.) (15c per oz.) (40c per ¼ lb.) ($1.45 per lb.) ($1.35 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) ($1.20 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots and up) prepaid.
Irish Grey Watermelon
This long, light-colored mottled grey melon is very solid, the rind tough, making it an excellent shipper. Like Excel, it must be well ripened to be real good and growers often make the mistake of picking too soon. Irish Grey has won a favorable place on the markets. Last year the seed was in demand much beyond the supply. This year the suppy is better. I offer selected seed as follows, my own growing; Price stock seed Irish Grey, from melons averaging about 35 pounds each (10c per pkt.) (15c per oz.) (45c per ¼ lb.) ($1.65 per lb.) ($1.50 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) ($1.35 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots) prepaid. No. 1 seed Irish Grey Watermelon saved from good melons grown especially for seed-(5c per pkt.) (10c per oz.) (30c per ¼ lb.) ($1.10 per lb.) ($1.00 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) (85c per lb. In 100-lb. Lots) prepaid.
Klondike Watermelon
Flesh very deep red of excellent quality, color of rind dark green, slightly ribbed when ripe. Oblong, square ended, the stem end is thicker than the blossom end. Seeds small spotted white and brown. I grew a fine crop of extra good stock this year. Klondike Watermelon is one of the finest for the home garden and a neaby market but not a good shipper. A favorite with California planters. Price-(10c per pkt.) (20c per oz.) (60c per ¼ lb.) ($2.25 per lb.) ($2.00 per lb in 10-lb. Lots) ($1.85 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots and up). Prepaid.
The New Tom Watson Watermelon
This large mottled green watermelon often weighs 50 to 60 pounds and averages on good soil over 30 pounds. It has won place among the very first as a market melon. The flesh is deep red and contains very few seeds, which are firmly bedded. It is the leader, taking into consideration size, shipping and eating quality. My stocks are very carefully selected and I have excellent seed to offer. Your orders will be placed where you should get excellent results if you buy this seed from me. This year my seed is of the best I ever offered. I have never received reports of white hearts from this stock. This picture was sent to me by Mr. A. A. Lane of Mississippi. He writes that this melon was grown from my seed and that he “sold 1,500 off of an acre and a quarter.” At $1.50 for this melon he got at the rate of $15.00 per pound for the seed, as it takes 10 melons to cut a pound of seed. Of course, all his melons did not bring $1.50 each, but it is safe to say he obtained a big return per acre. For the most critical planters I have selected the following: Stock Seed, New Tom Watson Watermelon. Cut from melons just like shown in the cut, would average 40 pounds or more. All ideal types. Ends cut off and the seed saved only from the middles. Nothing finer can be grown. Price-(5c per pkt.) (15c per oz.) (55c per ¼ lb.) ($2.00 per lb.) (10-lb. Lots, $1.85 per lb.) prepaid. Not prepaid (100-lb. Lots and up, $1.75 per lb.) No. 1 seed New Tom Watson Watermelon grown especially for seed and cut from good shippers. Price-(5c per pkt.) (10c per oz.) (30c per ¼ lb.) ($1.00 per lb.) (10-lb. Lots and up, 85c per lb.) delivered by express; (100-lb. Lots, 75c per lb.) not prepaid. WHAT SOUTHERN PLANTERS SAY. An extensive Florida planter wrote that from my seed he shipped 27 cars of Watsons before his neighbors began to ship; that the first four cars brought $1,000 per car, and that the market was $450.00 per car when his neighbors began to ship. He credited these results to my seed. I believe the seed had much to do with it, also the care he gave the crop. Remember-Good Seed, Good Care. Special offer on Tom Watson Watermelon Seed. Put up in sealed packages under my Trade Mark Brand “DVB Special” Tom Watson. This seed was saved from melons weighing 25 to 50 pounds each and are very fine. Plant these in comparison with the best you can buy from any other source. Price-(35c per ¼ lb.) ($1.20 per lb.) ($1.10 per lb. In 50-lb. Lots.) ($1.00 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots) prepaid.
The Oquawka Watermelon
A very fine new watermelon developed at Oquawka, Ill., from which place it takes its name. This is a cross between a White Seeded Excel and a watermelon from Columbia. It grows very large and the quality is very good. It will no doubt bedome a popular variety. The variety is fixed in type. The supply of seed is very short so I can only offer in pkts. and ozs. Price-(25c per pkt.) ($1.00 per oz.).
White Seeded Angelino Watermelon
A real winner, excellent quality and a good shipper. I have never grown another melon which was as good for both eating and shipping quality. One of my melons of this variety took first premium at the Colorado State Fair for Quality. The White Seeded Angelino is slightly oblong . The thin tough rind is dark green, the flesh a deep red, stringless, very sweet and the finest to eat of the the real good shippers-Size as grown here averages about 28 pounds. Planters who bought this seed last year are already buying “the same stock” for next year's planting. I have the seed in two grades: Stock Seed White Seeded Agelino from melons weighing 25 pounds and up. Price-(10c per pkt.) (20c per oz.) (65c per ¼ lb.) ($2.50 per lb.) ($2.40 per lb. In 10-lb. Lots) ($2.25 per lb. In 100-lb. Lots and up) prepaid. No. 1 Seed White Seeded Angelino, from good melons grown expressly for seed. Price-(5c per pkt.) (10c per oz.) (30c per ¼ lb.) ($1.10 per lb.) ($1.00 per lb. in10-lb. Lots) (85c per lb. In 100-lb. Lots) prepaid.
