When ready to pick, the yellowish surfaces of the pods are beautifully marbled and splashed with bright crimson. The vines bear great numbers of long pods, inclined to curve slightly, generally containing six beans each, although seven are not unusual. Until they have attained full size the pods are comparatively dull and inconspicuous, the color intensifying rapidly as maturity is reached. It is characteristic of the vines to throw out tendrils like those of pole beans, but the plants are distinctly dwarf and upright, displaying no tendency to climb or sprawl over the ground.
